Museums play a vital role in society. For a relatively small fee, you can access some of the most awe-inspiring art, history, and more. They can be a place to learn, to immerse yourself in a subject, or simply a place to spend a few hours.

Museums exist not just to preserve priceless treasures but also to ensure that people can enjoy them. A museum website should help draw in visitors with sneak peeks at current collections and exhibits and all of the necessary information, like hours and ticket prices. We have put together a list of some of the best museum websites from around the world to help you dream up your own museum website.

At Inclind, we work with all types of organizations - including nonprofit museums - to help them build websites that are both beautiful and effective. We truly collaborate with our clients, taking into consideration both their needs and the technical realities of building the website that they want. We offer a full range of services, including initial website design and development, website redesigns, custom integrations, and ongoing website support and maintenance

The 21 Top Museum Website Designs

When designing a museum website, it is critical to consider your ultimate goal. Do you want to show off your collection, garner donations, get more people to visit your website, or inspire others?

Most museums want to do a combination of all of these things. A great museum design will encourage visitors to buy a ticket, make a donation, or learn more about its work - without a hard sell. This is often done through calls to action (CTAs) - which can be anything from a pop-up or a subtle button on a website.

In addition to CTAs, a museum website should be accessible, optimized for mobile, and easy to navigate. It should also have technical features, like search engine optimization (SEO), to drive traffic to the site and integrations with software that can collect data on visitors. It should also be visually pleasing - something that the museums on our list all achieve (unsurprisingly, many of them are art museums!).

Below, we have put together a list of some of the best museum websites around. Read on to get inspired and to learn more about what makes a museum website truly shine.

Musee Magritte

Musee Magritte - or the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium - does a great job of being both beautiful and functional. A scrolling gallery on the home page shows off some of the pieces in its collection while also providing critical information. Given that many of its visitors are international, it also has the option to change the language in the top right corner of the screen. Two prominent buttons on the screen use color to draw attention to the CTAs to join and/or buy tickets.

Museum of Contemporary Art

In Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art showcases its ethos with a very contemporary website. Its stylized logo is splashed across the home page in black and white. The theme continues with the latest news in separate boxes below and a menu bar on the left side of the screen. A drop-down box also allows visitors to choose their language - a cool translation feature.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (more commonly referred to as The Met) is an art museum in New York City. Its website does a great job of inviting you in, with videos that make you feel as though you’re walking through the museum splashed across the home page. A news bar at the top provides need-to-know information, while the menu bar makes it easy for visitors to find what they need.

Museo del Prado

Spain’s Museo del Prado doesn’t put a lot of text on the screen. This design choice allows visitors to focus on the art instead. As you scroll down the page, you can see works of art in high definition - a more immersive experience than offered by many websites. On the top right, you can click to buy tickets, switch the language, search, or open up the menu.

V&A

The V&A is a U.K.-based museum that focuses on design and material culture. Its website highlights current exhibitions with a full-screen hero photo, enticing visitors to buy tickets. Bold white text pops against the background, while a call to action button further nudges website users to learn more.

MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art—or MoMA—is a New York City art museum. Its website is, unsurprisingly, modern. It features bold colors, up-close shots of its collection, and a limited amount of text. A CTA at the top right of the screen allows visitors to purchase tickets with just a few clicks.

RIJKSMuseum

In the Netherlands, RIJKSMuseum features some of the greatest works by artistic masters. Its website features a scrolling gallery so that visitors can get a sneak peek of its collections. The site also uses red to highlight its calls to action. For art lovers, the RIJKSStudio is a gold mine - with the ability to browse more than 800,000 works of art.

National Museum of Natural History

In Washington, DC, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History offers an in-depth look at everything natural, from animals to gems to humans. Its website is beautiful and useful, with its hours and location in bold text across the center of the screen. A button encourages people to plan their visit, while a bold CTA at the top of the screen solicits donations.

Neon Museum

Las Vegas’ Neon Museum showcases the neon signs that dominated the city’s skyline. Its website has a few cool features, including a video of people walking through the museum. It also has a pull-down bar at the top so you can immediately see the museum’s daily hours for the coming week. Two separate CTAs achieve the same goal - visit today and buy tickets.

Frans Hals Museum

The Frans Hals Museum is another art museum in the Netherlands featuring artists from Haarlem (including Frans Hals). Its website uses color well, with orange, purple, and black, making it stand out from the crowd. A timeline on the left side of the screen allows visitors to choose a year and see what exhibitions and events were offered then - a cool way to look back in history.

Center of Science and Industry

The Center of Science and Industry - or CoSi - is a science museum in Columbus, Ohio. Its website makes several smart choices, like listing the hours at the top center of the screen. A scrolling bar promotes events with pictures of current exhibits. Up top is a drop-down menu, a full menu, and buttons.

National Museum of African American History and Culture

The National Museum of African American History and Culture is one of the newest Smithsonian museums in Washington, DC. Its website is visually beautiful, with a full-screen photo of the mall as the background. Importantly, the website doesn’t just have information about current exhibits - it also has digital resources and initiatives, plus a “searchable museum” for visitors to learn more.

VanGogh Museum

In the Netherlands, the VanGogh Museum celebrates the work of the legendary artist Vincent Van Gogh. The museum’s website features a bold yellow background with black text, which makes it incredibly accessible. There is a button to switch languages up top, plus multiple calls to action. If you “scroll for more” at the bottom of the screen, it moves side-to-side - an interesting feature that feels fresh.

MIT Museum

The MIT Museum is a museum based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its website impresses with up-close pictures of exhibits that are slowly revealed in interesting ways. The site makes good use of white space, which contrasts nicely with the thick black text. As you scroll down, the white is replaced with bright colors for visual interest.

M+

M+ is a museum of contemporary visual culture located in Hong Kong. It makes several great choices, including using ovals for its buttons, which isn’t often used. The M+ logo contracts as you scroll, which is a cool visual effect. It also has a number of accessibility options, including changing the site from bright colors to a simple black-and-white scheme for screen readers.

National Academy of Design

The National Academy of Design, located in New York City, is a museum dedicated to design. Its website is relatively spare, with a white background and black text. This allows the photos of exhibits and events to pop in the background. A large “support us” button puts a call to action front and center.

National Building Museum

The National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., celebrates all things architecture. Its website focuses on its current exhibits with a full-screen scrolling gallery. A smart use of its signature color - red - highlights what visitors need to know (such as the end date of exhibits and where to click for tickets).

Getty Museum

The Getty Museum in Los Angeles includes both art museums and a library. Its website is modern, with an image of museumgoers taking up most of the screen and its name written vertically on the left. Rather than clutter the screen with text, a drop-down menu bar at the top makes for easy navigation.

Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw

In Poland, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw showcases the work of Polish artists. Its museum focuses on modern style, with lots of white space and large black font. At the top of the screen, members can log into the member portal. A “star” button at the top allows visitors to see works of art or pages that they have “favorited” quickly.

Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum in Paris is one of the most famous art museums in the world. Its website recognizes that it probably doesn’t need to attract visitors but must help people plan appropriately. A pop-up box on the home page informs visitors of the museum’s hours while also offering options to book tickets and prepare for a visit.

Museum of Pink Art

The Museum of Pink Art is a virtual art museum focusing on pink. Its website is far from standard - when you click to enter, you are taken on a museum tour, where you can control where you go and what you see using your mouse and arrow keys. Of course, that’s because this museum doesn’t exist in real life - it’s online only! It is a unique way to experience art and learn more about the topic without ever leaving your home.
